Remote code(s) for ONKYO TX-NR686 Receiver
The ones built-in did not work. And code 31805 doesn't work either. Anyone know of a code that works?

@wtmullis what is the receiver model and remote model? And have you tried allowing the receiver to manually program the remote by itself?
If so, you can lookup codes online as well as use some more codes shown by the DIRECTV receiver. It also helps to choose different ONKYO models similar to yours and see if those codes work.

I got my Onkyo RZ830 to work but can't remember how. I know I screwed around with it a while till I finally got it. I thought I wrote the codes down but can't find them. I had an older Onkyo that was programed that was a 686 I believe and it's code and the new one were different. I remember that. If I find the code I'll post it. Look on the net for the codes. That's how I got mine going

It is a Genie HR44; the remote is a "Universal Remote" and has no model number on the outside or the inside (where I can see into the battery location). I have a previously-programmed remote for this Onkyo receiver and it works just fine. Only I no longer have the user manual where I wrote down what code actually worked for the AV Receiver.
I'm gonna ask but pretty sure there's no way to find out: "Is there a way to find out what code is actually programmed into the remote?
PS - I said the existing remote works just fine and it does except the number 4 button and number 0 buttons no longer work. The work-arounds are simply a PITA...

@wtmullis unfortunately it is not possible to find the code used to program a previously used remote. For now, you will have to operate the ONKYO receiver with the old remote until you find a proper code or solution for this new one.
You say it is a ‘Universal Remote.’ Does it have the DIRECTV logo anywhere? Usually, the model number is on the top left of the remote in white text. It usually begins with RC.

If you have the "Universal Remote", the DIRECTV set up codes for ONKYO audio receivers are usually: 30135, 30380, 30842, 31298,
31320, 31531, 31805, 31905.
You can give a try to those codes, or follow the steps listed here to find the 5-digit code based on your remote model (the model number is printed in the upper left corner of your remote) to program your external equipment.
Let us know how it goes, we'll keep an eye on you.

Hey did one of the codes work that help sent below? I'll tell you the best solution.
I have been using them for over 20 years and you don't have to buy a very expensive one. Less than $100. The are made by Logitech.
It's a Harmony remote. You use computer, phone, tablet to tell it the model numbers of all your equipment, TV, sat, sound sys. Dvd player. Tell it what inputs and you upload it to remote and Wa La. Push watch TV and it turns on the TV, sat, sound sys. Selects the right inputs. Decide to what a movie push watch movie and it changes inputs turns of sat turns on DVD. It is by far the best universal remote on the planet. Even my Mother who can't operate a flashlight can operate it. After I programed it.
I just looked to see if I could find a model I used up until a year or 2 ago and Logitech has discontinued them. Why idk. There some still around. I would buy one
I have a brand new one with a color display here I have as a back up. I bought it after the cheaper one worn out but got used to using the DirecTV one for TV and I use the Harmony one for everything else. I don't like the way the new one fits my hand is the problem. It worked flawlessly. I paid about 3x what the original cheap one I used for years and wish I had replaced the worn out one with the same model. There is another brand Broadlink but I have no experience with them.
Look into it. Good luck.
Btw I don't work for or get paid from Logitech. Just love there products.
