remote doesn't work unless in bright lighting or shining a flashlight on it

I have had a couple of receivers where if there isn't enough light at night the remote doesn't work.  I've called numerous times and they have never ever heard of this problem?  I can't believe I"m the only one for this to happen to.  Only my main receiver does this, an older version in my den works fine.  I have to shine a flashlight on the unit for it to work, or turn the room lights up high. It works fine during the daylight, but when it is cloudy I have to use light.

First thing to try is resetting your DVR/Receiver using the red button behind the front panel access card door. See if that helps.
