Older boxes have front panel controls. You can try using the DirecTV app remote on your phone, but has the risk of changing channels of another box (as it did to me, so possibly an issue with dynamic IP).
You need a remote of some sort to change the channels with DirecTV. Changing channels on the box or even the TV set itself are actions of the past (even though they are good backups).
