If you have Whole Home DVR service you cannot use the HR24's ethernet port.

If you in fact have the DECA or DECA BB module, as posted you cannot use a direct connection with Whole Home or it will disable the system.

On the other hand, if you do not have Whole Home and are using one of the various Wireless adapters, then a Cat5 cable would be fine.  Once connected you'd need to do a red button (inside card door) reset of the HR24.

Right.  You cannot use the HD DVR's ethernet port for internet connectivity when you have Whole Home DVR Service.  The only way to get internet connectivity with a DECA-based WHDVR setup is using DirecTV's Cinema Connection Kit.  This provides the installer with a Broadband DECA Adapter and power supply that will bridge the WHDVR network (DECA coax) with your home network/internet (ethernet).  Call them and request that an installer come back to finish the job.  This should have been provided with your WHDVR installation.
