Searching for signal

Recently my DVR40 has had problems receiving some channels (usually see searching for signal... message) the picture and sound break up. When I go through setup and tell it I only have one cable connected everything works fine for all channels. If I repeat setup for two cables the problem returns. Does this indicate a receiver problem?

I have changed multiswitch - no change. Switched inputs on DVR - no change. Checked cable connections - found no problems.
