Sounds get garbled

I'm not sure how to correctly explain this.  Often, the audio - on any channel - gets garbled, cuts out, and makes the broadcast unwatchable.  It goes away if the channel is changed.  This has been happening for quite a while but it's gotten worse lately.

My receiver is probably 5 years old.  Not HD and no DVR.

Any words of wisdom?
