Stand alone computer / internet hookup

My husband received word that he would be able to work from home part of the week if he has a stand alone computer / internet hookup. Do we need to buy another modem and have Directv come out to hook that up or can we do it ourselves? I can do the technical stuff myself, but I've never done it with directv.
