Strange Audio Dropouts
My son, who has a HR20 HD DVR just like me now considers me to be his personal DirecTV Technical Forum:0)
He called me last night with a strange issue with his HR20. He was recording American Idol last night while watching other programming. Around 8:00pm the audio just died on the channel they were watching(no sound at all, not the brrrrp issue). He is using HDMI connection(via a HDMI switch) to his TV. When he changed to some other channels the sound seemed to be present on SD channels, but missing on most/all HD channels. When he went to American Idol in his Playlist and started playing the recording there was no sound either.
I had him check the HDMI switch by playing a DVD on the other connection and it was fine. Then I had him do a red button reset and when it came back up all of the channels had sound. Fixed, by a rbr...right?......wrong!! They began watching the American Idol recording and all was fine until it came to the same point in time when the original problem happened and bingo......audio died again on the recording. Again, checking channels revealed some(all SD I think) working and some/most/all HD not working. And the American Idol recording had no sound even at the beginning. At that point he's telling me his HR20 is toast and I told him if he called D* for a replacement it would cost him approx. $20 for S/H since he doesn't have the Protection Plan. That didn't make him real happy because he has been with D*(changing from Comcast on my recommendation) for a little less than a year and expected a free replacement:0(
At that point all I could think of was a power reset cycling of the HR20 to see if that would fix it, but he was pretty frustrated at that point and didn't feel like messing with it any more last night. Also, he has a H21 HD receiver in the bedroom and when I had him check it, there was no audio problems at all on that box. Other than the power reset, what should I have him try next to resolve this issue?????
