Strange noises from R22

I have an R22 and occassionally it will make a 'spooling' noise, similar to what dial-up internet used to. I shut the power off to the receiver every night, and although it's plugged in, I can sometimes hear it even with the power off. Mostly it's when it's on though. Was wondering if it's time to replace the DVR? Only got it in Feb 2009.
