No, DTV sat is not a streaming service but the receivers can access the On Demand channels.

Regarding your question, DIRECTV Stream is a Streaming service which will allow you to watch on 20 devices at once. If you have a Streaming device compatible you won't need any device. However you can order a DIRECTV Stream Box for $5/mo on a 24mo installment or $120 one time.

@Gmaurice

Sounds like you may be asking about DIRECTV STREAM, not DirecTV.

DirecTV - This is service by satellite. You pay for each TV on the service. The DirecTV app is only for use on smart phones and tablets, not TVs, so is not available on any streaming device (Roku, Firestick, etc.) and even forbids trying to cast to TV from the smaller devices.

DIRECTV STREAM - This is a streaming-only service. Separate from DirecTV, though they share the same owner. As the service is designed purely for streaming, you can get their dedicated streaming device, others (Roku, etc.), or on some TVs that can download apps (TV app version is not suggested until they better optimize it).

For the streaming service, the box is optional, not included.

DIRECTV STREAM | Live & On Demand Streaming TV . Cut the Cable Provider!

Watch all your favorite TV in one place with our optional streaming device for an additional $5/mo. + tax
For well-qualified customers. Others pay $120 upfront.
