DTV sat service doesn't use modems.  If you have a smart TV with the apps from the steaming services you want or can get them from the TV app store then you use the TV remote to watch them otherwise you need a streaming device connected to the TV  DTV sat service has nothing to do with streaming services.

Thanks Shannon for your reply.  So my ATT internet wi fi modem will work with DT Stream?  Other than the sat dish, can I use the DTV equipment with my stream service or do i need to purchase the stream equipment?  What if my Samsung TV is not on the list of compatable devices?

Thanks for your help!

You can't use DTV equipment for streaming but you can keep DTV sat service and have a streaming service.

oh dear.  Now Im confused.  What about the dish?  Thats my whole point of switching.  My HOA is making all of us take down our dishes...therefore the switch.  It would save a lot of hassel.   I can keep things as they are and just stream from my smart TV? I have to have this done by Saturday of this week!  Shannon thank you for helping this Grandma with my questions. :)  I tried calling Directv but was on hold for over half an hour and gave up.

First, the HOA can't make you take down your dish if it is on your property. The FCC rule https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/installing-consumer-owned-antennas-and-satellite-dishes overrides anything your HOA is mandating, assuming the installation you have meets the FCC rules.

Second, if you sign up for Directv Stream this is a completely different service. You do not need a dish or a Directv satellite receiver. You do need a device capable of receiving the Direct stream, connected to your internet.  This device can be a Directv stream box, or roku, or several other devices. You can also use an app if there is one built into your TV. Most Samsungs have the app. But it's rated very poorly by users. Most people recommend using the separate device.

If you go the streaming route, you might want to purchase their separate streaming box with its own remote.  This way, you will be able to know what channel you are on when switching channels or channel numbers you know,  from memory.
