Taped Shows are freezing, do I need to delete them?

I've only had satellite since Aug. 14th. I learned typing on a manual typewriter, so you know I don't understand 1/10th of what I'm reading here. I'm having the same problem as a lot of other people, shows I've taped either have a black screen or it will start to show, then freeze the picture while the voice still keeps going. Sometimes I have to unplug the whole thing because even if I try to go to a live show, it still stays on the frozen screen. Main question: I've been keeping the shows on the DVR, hoping there is someway I can get them back. Am I better off just deleting them? Is there a tape or something inside that is defective and messes up whenever I tape a show on that certain area? How do I tell what model I have? (I put R-15 because I had to put something, but I'm not sure.) I'm sorry to sound so stupid, but I called Support once about a remote problem, and they acted like they couldn't get rid of me fast enough. Thank you.
