Universal Remotes

Do the universal remotes work for all receivers?

We have recently hooked back up a receiver in our bedroom after not having a TV in there for many years. It is the same receiver and TV that was in the room years ago but then we remodeled and never put it back in there until now.

I have misplaced the original remote but have a spare universal remote. I have tried all of the tips on the DTV website but it is still not working.

Does anyone know if the universal remotes work with the older receivers?
