What is required for DVR installation?
I just called and scheduled a service call to get my 2nd DVR up and running, and the earliest date I can get is Oct 6th. While, this would not normally be a problem, I currently have a constant message in the corner of my TV indicating the R-16 box is looking for a signal on satellite 2. It also puts up the screensaver after a few minutes, I am assuming because it is looking for a signal, the guide does not work etc.
So, I have decided to go ahead and install this myself. I just need to know what materials I am likely to need, other than an additional run of RG6 cable to the room the DVR is in. I am guessing that I will require a multiswitch, but not sure what type.
I currently have the feed coming in from the satellite (not sure on the exact type, but it was 1 round piece, instead of 3 with the newer HD dishes) and I believe I have 2 coax runs coming from that into a multiswitch that has already been installed (we already have DVR in one room, just need to add it to a 2nd room). I can get the model number of the current switch later if it helps. I believe it is a 3x4 switch.
Do I need to get something like a 3 x 6 switch? Connect the 2 lines to the existing DVR, 2 lines to the new DVR and 1 line to my standard receiver? Are there any recommended switches?
Thanks.

If then poster is running a 3x4 multiswitch then he has a SD system. Also two outputs from the dish indicates a dual output round dish.
naiku, Do you currently have any HD equipment? If the answer is no, then you'd be well advised to forget doing this yourself because you need a new dish and the multiswitch you have is useless for HD.

Thanks for both of the replies. I do not currently have any HD equipment, and only running SD equipment. There are only 2 outputs from the dish. The equipment I have is an R15 (existing DVR) an R16 (new DVR that needs installed) and a standard receiver. I don't have any plans on adding HD for the time being. Is this still something I can install? Or, since I am planning to run 2 DVR's do I need a new dish?
I don't mind having to buy a new multiswitch, they seem fairly cheap online, new RG6 is also fairly cheap. But, if I need a new dish etc even if sticking with SD then I will wait until Oct 6th. Would a new dish be covered under the $49 installation fee?

Okay, great clarification. You do not need a new dish but you do need a new multiswitch. The one I would recommend is a Zinwell WB68. Connect the two coax from the dish to the first two inputs of the switch. There will be 8 outputs, enough to feed two to each DVR and one to the receiver, with three spares.
A "searching" message on one tuner usually can be traced to a dirty, wet, corroded or loose coax connection.

Great, a Zinwell was the multiswitch that I had been looking at. It sounds like the hardest part for me will be running the new coax up from the garage and to the bedroom where the new DVR is (annoyingly, it is the only room in the house with only 1 coax running to it already).

If you were patient, the installer will run the coax and supply the switch, probably for $49 fee, cheap in my opinion.
Edit add: You could (if you have the new DVR) connect it as is and run it on one tuner and let the installer come later and run the 2nd coax and install the switch.

While I agree that $49 is cheap, I can pick up a WB68 for $20 and cable for around $20 as well. If I do it myself I can then run the cable through the house and behind the wall instead of having to pay for a custom install (which when I asked about the person on the phone said I would have to negotiate that additional charge with the installer on top of the $49, which from my research can be anywhere from an additional $50 to $100)
Also, the reason I am being impatient is because I already have the new DVR, and with it connected to only a single tuner am getting a constant message in the corner that it is searching for a signal on satellite 2, the guide simply says "regular scheduled programming" and it goes to sleep every few minutes.

Understood, so have at it. You do know that while waiting to run the 2nd cable you can redo satellite setup on the DVR and at the appropriate spot indicate single rather than dual tuner. That will get rid of the message. You'd have to change it back when you got the 2nd cable of course.

Ah ha, thank you for that. I had a suspicion that there had to be somewhere I could disable the 2nd tuner somehow. At least I can now get rid of the message while either getting what I need to DIY the job, or waiting for Oct 6th.
