WH-DVR w/ Internet setup

Hi,

I just ordered Directv service w/ WH-DVR and also added the TV internet connection. Before ordering, I called the Directv tech support and explained the attached setup and I was told everything would work fine. However, when I talked to my neighbour, who has a similar setup and had his installation last week, told me that he couldn't get the WH-DVR. As can be seen from the attached pic, I have a single coax running from outside to a box inside the house. And single coax lines are running to 2 rooms from the box. I will have the HD-DVR in room1 and HD-Receiver in room2. I have my DSL modem in room2 and don't have wired internet in room1. I would like to know if it's possible to have WH-DVR and VOD on both receivers w/o the need for running extra cables (coax, cat5, etc.) around the house. At this point I don't know what kind of dish and receivers I'll get.

Thanks in advance.

blackeagle1903,

The WH DVR system will work with this setup, depending on your HD DVR and HD receivers whether a DECA and maybe a power inserter (at least one) will be added to them or not. Then a DECA with a 18 power supply will be connected to your DSL modem. This connection can use your existing coax cables, they will be connected to a SWiM and which will allow both receivers to access On Demand, Media Share and Directv2PC.

Be sure the installer puts in the DECA module/power supply that will connect to your router as Madmack outlines.  Many are leaving that off and simply connecting a Ethernet cable will not work properly.  If you have 24 series receivers, your installation will look thus.  If you have different series boxes each will have a DECA module but no independent power supply.

Thanks for the replies madmack3 and dcd.

dcd,

I might have a problem w/ the setup you attached as it is. DECA is connected on a separate 3rd input on the switch. Can it be connected with a splitter and share a coax to the switch w/ one of the receivers? If so, I won't have any problems.

Thanks,

The DECA/router module can connect at any point in the coax "tree".  The diagram is not intended to be literal, only to show the flow of information and equipment involved.  A typical installation might install a two way splitter it the coax at the most convenient location and run an additional coax to the router where the DECA module/power supply/Ethernet jumper would connect it to the router.  Conversely, if an individual already had a Cat5 cable near one of the TV's, the module could be installed there.

Hi,

Installation was done yesterday and everything was connected as dcd posted. I have one HR24-100 HDDVR and one H24-100 HDR. I can watch recorded shows and downloaded VODs on the HDR w/o any problems and I can schedule which shows to be recorded from the HDR. However, I can't access to VOD channels from HDR. So, I can watch downloaded VOD on both receivers but need to do the downloads from HDDVR menu. Is it how it is supposed to work? And when I run system test, I keep getting Caller-ID problem message. For caller ID future on both receivers, do I need phone line connection on both or just one enough? I like the smart search option on HR24. I wish H24 had it too.

Thanks,

Caller-ID problem message. For caller ID future on both receivers, do I need phone line connection on both or just one enough?

1.  On Demand scheduling has to be added from the DVR as you've discovered.  I can surmise a reason.  In order to have the On Demand guide present, the On Demand service must be connected.  Because a non DVR is incapable of recording On Demand, the guide is not present, thus you can't schedule On Demand recordings.  Also, you didn't ask this but if you download a PPV program, only the DVR it's recorded on will see it until you begin playback and accept the purchase message.  Then it will be available to all networked boxes.

2.  I'm not sure about this one because I have a phone connected to all of mine.  What kind of problem message are you getting.  Normally if caller ID isn't working it simply doesn't appear.  If you're running tests that return "no phone line detected" on an individual receiver that doesn't mean much because the test wouldn't test other receivers to determine if they had a phone line.  Why not call yourself from a cell phone and see if you show up on all the boxes?

for caller ID to function a land based phone line must be connected to every receiver in the house.  Now for DTV call back (when a DTV receiver calls the DTV server to download purchases made on your account) one phone hook up to any receiver in the house on a SWiM system will sufice.  ofcourse with ethernet conectivity this will be redundant.
