Whole home dvr installed last night but.....

My system was installed last night. I was scheduled between noon and 4. The installer didn't show up until 6 pm and in a hurry. The dish and three receivers were installed. When I asked about the cinema connection kit I was told there was no phone line in the room with the DVR and I wouldn't be able to order pay per view. I told him I didn't have a land line any longer. With that, the installation was wrapped up. I thought the professional installation of this kit included pulling a wire from my modem to connect to the internet? I waited over two weeks for installation. If I was told they needed a cat 6 cable from the modem to the DVR I could have pulled it in a half hour. The modem is in the next room with floor access in the basement.

 

I called customer service this morning and was told I needed a professional to install the connection kit. I told him the direct tv professional was there last night and left without installing it. He just repeated a professional installer needs to install the connection kit and it couldn't be done wirelessly. So I emailed tech support a couple of hours ago. I get the feeling I'm going to wind up on the short end of the stick with this installation.

 

So how hard is it to install an internet connection to a whole house DVR? Should I ask for a self installation kit? I rebuilt my entire house including wiring, plumbing and heating. Installing a connection kit can't be that difficult.

the connection for a WHDVR system can only be done professionally by a DTV tech.  call DTV and request that they come back to install this kit. it should be free since it was supposed to be included with the installation.

Thanks for the quick response. Is there an additional cable required from my modem/router to the DVR? I'll pull the cable myself if I know what type of cable to pull. This way all the installer has to do is terminate the cable ends and complete the installation.

you can pull an RG6 from your modem/router location to where the main SWM splitter is.  you can also pull a cat5 cable from your modem/router location to where the main SWM splitter is.  DTV techs only use RG6 so that is what they would pull.  but in reality it does not matter what cable you pull as long as the DECA BB is connected to the DTV system.  note that DTV techs do not have RJ45 connectors to terminate cat 5

Again thanks for the quick response. I'll call to set up an appointment with the installer and have the cables in place this weekend and terminated.

Best to start your own new thread using the "Create New Post" button on the main forum page.  Your problem may very well be different from the original poster's.    With a new thread you can provide more information about your equipment, location, and troubleshooting you've tried so far.  And this forum software makes it difficult to track or respond to folks that add onto someone else's thread.

I'm going to pull the cables this weekend and just want to verify that I need a RG6 from the router to the SWM splitter and a lan cable from the router to the SWM spitter. Is there a need for a lan cable from the router to the DVR? This is a whole home DVR setup. I'm going from the basement to the attic and down into the second floor bedroom so I just want to make sure I have the instructions correct before I start pulling moldings and cutting drywall. It's better to ask twice, do it once and not have my wife complaining about the dust than to make a mess twice and get yelled at twice. 🙂

You've got too many cables in the mix.  Pull a RG6 from the splitter to the router.  OR Pull a Cat 5 from the router to the splitter.  It's one or the other, with the former being the standard.  You do not need both.  If you pull the RG6, then at the router the pictured adapter will connect to your router with the short Ethernet jumper.

The installer came last night. The cinema connections is installed and he also cleaned up the work from the previous installer. Mounted the SWM to a floor joist, cable tied the coax together and secured them along the joists so they are out of the way. All in all, a very neat installation. Thanks for the advice.

Glad to hear it worked out so well.  If you haven't done so, downloading a music concert from channel 1239 as a speed and reliability test is what I recommend.
