Whole home install is the tech correct?

I have 3 hd dvr 's and  3 Hd Receivers. I thought you  need 16 swim since it is a total  of 9 lines. I called in before the  install to make sure he had  the16 way with him.

I got the supervisor who said I only need an 8 way since the dvr can share a port. I never saw that in any of the post.

Is this true ??

You absolutely need a SWM16 for all of the DVRs and Receivers to use the Whole Home DVR service with DECA.  SWM8 maxes out at 8 tuners and you have 9.

thanks  what will happen if they try and hook 9 to the eight. I will lose a  tuner ? I think I am going to have to convince this guy. The Supervisor said that  using a 16 was old method and now the swim port can  handle  2 tuners.

I 'd  like  to get some documentation to show him.

A single SWiM outlet can handle two tuners, but the entire SWiM segment is limited to a total of 8 tuners. If you connect 9 tuners, the results will vary depending on what channels are being watched on each receiver. Sometimes it will work and other times one tuner will get errors because there are no SWiM channels available for it to use. In the past, two SWM-8 modules could be used to support more than 8 tuners, but that causes problems linking the two for  Whole Home/MRV. That's why you must use the SWM-16, since it internally links the two 8-tuner segmants.

thanks,   they canceled the  install  since my dish did  not have swim lnb. They are coming  back Weds . Does the swim LNB allow you  to run only 1 line from the dish instead of 4?

I want to make sure I get this set up correct. Dish swim lnb   1 line to  swim16 splitter  to the 9 tuners  and router.

Is  that correct ?

Yes a SWiM LNB has only one output, but it can't be used if you have more than 8 tuners. A SWiM setup for more than 8 tuners requires a conventional dish with four cables like the one you probably have now. The four cables would then run to a SWM-16 module.

fdelmo10,

Here's your documentation, see page 46 on for the SWM16 data. It's a big file so give it time to load.  It's a pdf file so I'm not sure the browser will dispaly it.

Again, depending on what channels are selected and where, one tuner on one of the receivers will not work properly at times. Most likely showing 771 SFSS errors. The problem tuner will probably be on different receivers at different times too. Since 9 tuners may work correctly at times (e.g., when two or more are tuned to the same channel), the problem may not be apparent right away. Sooner or later you will have problems however.

If they install a SWiM dish (or a single SWM-8 module) and connect 9 tuners, the only way to get it to work properly 100% of the time would be to disable one of the tuners on one DVR.

Just so you know the whole home dvr service will not link (bridge between the 16 channels with the 16 way module) it has to have one link for each 8 channels and only the receivers on that 8 way will link

The SWM-16 module was specifically designed and built to provide a 16 channel MRV cloud.  All 16 tuners can access each other via MRV.  The coupler that combines two SWM-8 modules will not bridge the two, and you will have two 8 tuner MRV clouds as ramosjr85 notes.
