Whole-home DVR - are DECA's required?

I guess these things are on back order...I'm a bit frustrated that:

A) The installer didn't have ALL the equipment needed when coming out to setup the whole-home DVR (and adding 1 new HD-DVR)

2) That he had ME call DTV who somehow ordered me 3 CAT5 cables instead of DECA

d) That after 3 phone calls I found out the DECAs are on back order with no ETA.

So, are DECAs really required?  What do they do?  Can/shouldn't I be able to use my existing wireless network...isn't that what it will be using anyway?

Do the DECAs create their own wireless network, so that if I pulled my router there'd be not impact?

Could I setup a second router for WHDVR, since I read something about internet packets interfering?

Anything else I can do besides sit and wait?  I'm all confused as to the need for these things, but wondering if I can do anything.

Thanks.

A supported Whole Home DVR network requires the coax-based DECA networking.  DECA is really required.  It provides the best network performance for WHDVR streaming using the existing satellite coax and not affecting your home network's performance.  It's rather unforgivable that you're getting the runaround from DirecTV on this because the installer should take care of this for you.  DECA is not intended for self-installation.  Call back DirecTV and escalate your request to get this finished properly.  Be sure they also included the Cinema Connection Kit to bridge the DECA coax network to your home ethernet network for internet access.

Thanks dog,

Yeah, it's a long story, but the tech SHOULD have had the equipment coming out, since he was doing a DVR upgrade AND setting up the WHDVR.  So let me dig a little on 2 points (okay, 3):

1) If I setup a separate wifi-network - separate router the whole bit, can I get around the DECA, since I have no idea when they will have them?

2) I realize it's not intended for home install, but I really don't want to give up another afternoon for a tech to come out.  I'm fairly technical blah blah blah...and figure it's worth a shot rather than waiting longer.

3) Cinema Connection Kit - again, is this required?  I've heard 2 stories...one being that it is ONLY required to allow for the playing of on-demand without waiting for a scheduled start.  We don't watch much/any on demand, so the $30 + shipping they were going to charge didn't seem worth it.  Do I need the CCK if all I want is to be able to watch recorded shows from one DRV on another?

Thanks again...

1. No.  Wireless networking is not suitable for streaming between DVRs/Receivers in a Whole Home network.  Only the coax-based DECA networking is supported.

2. You won't be able to get a supported Whole Home DVR setup by yourself.

3. Yes, it's required if you want home network or internet access to the Whole Home DVRs/Receivers.  If you don't care about OnDemand, then you don't really need it.  But note that it's supposed to be provided FOR FREE as part a correct and proper WHDVR installation.

At this point it's up to you how hard you want to push DirecTV to get this completed properly.

Where can I point to their policy that it should be provided for free? I specifically asked why I needed to spend $30 when it wasn't mentioned before. I will definitely follow up on that, but is there anywhere I can say your policy is to give these out free?

Thanks again..

Clearly states it's free for new customers.  It's also supposed to be included with WHDVR installations for existing customers.

Thanks...They pointed me here when I asked for clarification:

This says "Equipment upgrade charges may apply".  I guess you wanna be a new customer 🙂

I don't really need the CCK, yeah for the 1 time I might want it, it will be nice, but not worth the money...I just want the WHDVR at this point.

We'll see.  I've gotten a few responses to some Tweets I've put up, maybe that will escalate my issue....

I'd guess you aren't aware of all the slick free features that having your Whole Home system networked provides.  You are entitled to it at no charge regardless of where they point you.
