Why can't I have a DVR?
We had DirecTV set up in April 2010. At the time of installation, my husband was told that we could not have a DVR because we didn't have the "right wiring" in our home (that was built in the 80s). We had a DirecTV DVR at our previous address, and as far as we can tell, nothing is different at this one. We have several phone jacks and a cable connection. We also have broadband internet service and a wi-fi router.
Does anyone know why a DVR would not be feasible for us? Is it possible that the installer didn't know what he was talking about? I thought that I could get used to not having a DVR, but the lack of one is still driving me crazy! I think it is comparable to trying to live without a microwave!
We don't need HD, just a way to pause and record TV. Thanks!

A DVR needs 2 coax lines from the antenna in order to be able to watch one channel and record another at the same time. Most homes are not wired that way. If it wasn't possible to run a second line to your desired DVR location, or if you objected to the installer running a second line, then that would explain your situation. I would suggest you contact DIRECTV and see if you're eligible for a free upgrade. If you're able to order that, then you'll get another installer to come out and assess the situation.

Sounds like U had some lazy installer that just didn't want to do one. I am older than dirt and I could install one in any house I have ever seen.

I don't understand this either. There is virtually no reason I can think of why you should not have been able to have a DVR.

Perhaps an inside wall in a basement or an inside wall on a slab-built home without an attic?
