Yellow light flashing
Last May I had an install during Memorial Weekend. The guy installed whole home DVR for me, and told me that installers are being directed to do it for new customers. BTW he did a great job. I already have a TiVo in the room with the equipment necessary to load from my HD-DVR, so I haven't paid much attention to it since. However, as I woke up in the middle of the night yesterday, I realized the yellow light on this device had been flashing since May. The installer told me that I may need a few days for software to download in order to have WH DVR functioning. It never did. Is there something I can do to prompt the software that was supposed to install in June?

What "device" has the yellow flashing light? Does it have any model number markings on it?
What models HD DVRs and HD Receivers do you have? Tivo DVRs are not WHDVR-compatible.
Your WHDVR installation back in May would have been among the first official installations, so it's quite possible that the installer didn't really know what he was doing. Had you reported this problem to DirecTV within 90-days of installation, your service visit would have been free. If you have DirecTV's Equipment Protection Plan, it's still free. Otherwise expect to pay ~$50, unless you can convince the support rep to waive the fee since WHDVR has never worked for you.
