Stingray Music

The Stingray Music app says to contact DirecTV & DirecTV Stream to offer Stingray Music. Thanks 👍👍 Dean Baden Leonardtown, MD

Oh they care about their subscribers. By limiting those broadcasts to the satellite subscribers insures their subscriber base to satellite service. Great marketing. Want those channels then get satellite and pay for it.

don't be an (Editado segᅢᄎn las pautas del foro). I had satellite but had to switch to streaming when trees in the park grew to obstruct the satellite. nothing to do with keeping satellite base or switching to it. when i got satellite 10 years ago, there was no streaming. i pay the same and get less.

Since Directv Stream does not offer music channels I would look into getting Spotify it is free unless you want the premium version and you can listen to a lot of different kinds of music. Plus you should be able to do this from your streaming box if you have one or any other streaming device.

@p6173 - There are pluses and minuses to both the satellite and streaming services.  The streaming service offers far fewer channels (though many of the missing ones are of questionable value, at least to me) and there is less "built-in" (PPV, music, etc.), and it offers fewer add-ons.  On the other hand, the streaming approach allows you to access a huge variety of other services (Netflix, Hulu, Prime, Pandora, Spotify, etc., etc., etc.) on the same device (though generally requiring their own subscriptions).

As far as cost goes, plan vs plan the streaming is significantly less expensive, especially once you get past any initial promotional pricing, doesn't lock you into a contract, doesn't have an extra "sports fee", doesn't charge for installation, doesn't cost extra for equipment (you'll need devices, but you can buy what you want and aren't locked into "leases" forever).

I really wish Directv Stream would Allow the Stingray app to work on the Stream box.   The box is a google/android based box.  it has access to the play store.  The Stingray app works on all android based phones.  This is the same concept as the Spotify app or the Pandora app, etc.  The Stingray app (just like spotify) requires a subscription of $4/month if its not paid for by TV company. In other words, directv would not have to pay Stingray.   Stingray says Directv has to "allow" the APK of the Stingray app to be installed on the Directv streaming box.  If Directv can allow the Spotify app and other streaming apps, why not allow Stingray app.

The DIRECTV STREAM box is primarily for their own service. It is not a streaming device for all apps like a Roku or Firestick (or other similar devices). So it has a small selection of popular apps that can work.

So a dedicated streaming device, that is not made by and for a particular company but for whatever apps you want, would be what you need.

Actually, the DirecTV Stream device allows/supports (almost) all Android TV apps.  I don’t think they make huge efforts to test other apps or fix issues if there are any, but I also don’t think they go out of their way to block anything.

@stingray_app_please - However, the device is not an “Android-based box”.  It is an Android TV based device.  Android and Android TV are not the same thing - they use the same lower-level code, but their GUI-level code is not the same.  While some Android apps that aren’t GUI dependent  might work without changes on Android TV (and are marked that way in their Play Store entry), most won’t work as is. In general, things that work on both are actually different apps.  And according to Stingray’s website, they don’t have a version for Android TV (or as best I can tell, any other TV device - just mobile devices, the web, and through a TV carrier’s service).  So this isn’t a DirecTV limitation - this is a Stingray limitation.

I can’t speak for DrecTV satellite service, but DirecTV Stream doesn’t provide or build in support for 3rd party services - they just allow apps on their device, and if the 3rd party doesn’t have an app, there’s nothing DirecTV can do about it. It appears (unless I am reading the Stingray website wrong, and I don’t think I am) that they also don’t have apps for Roku, FireTV, AppleTV, or any smart TVs.  My guess as to why is that they make almost all their money from cable TV providers and don’t want to irritate them by competing against them with their own app and subscriptions. As noted earlier, there are a lot of other music services that do have apps for all these devices.

@DeanSOMD_2019 - Are you asking for Stingray to be included as part of the service’s subscription - a bunch of channels, like it is on cable?  Or are you looking for the Stingray app on your device so you can use your own (separate) subscription, like some of the earlier posters on this thread?

I don’t think there’s a chance you will get the former - given that DirecTV Stream is an internet service and there are already a bunch of internet accessible music services (with apps that run on the streaming devices that Stream runs on), it doesn’t make much sense for them to raise everyone’s bill to add one that most people wouldn’t want. Cable provides it because cable set top boxes don’t provide access to those apps, so it’s sort of a captive audience.

For the latter, there is a Stingray app for Android mobile devices (just not TV devices) - but you’ll need to get your own subscription to Stingray. And of course all those other (probably much better) music services are also available on Android mobile devices, so there’s likely not much point to that.
