Can’t get pass the checking updates in setup...

Setting up new box, can’t get passed the checking for updates part of setup. Gives error 80003-001 code and to try again later. Tried through WiFi, and Ethernet at 2 different locations, so it’s definitely not network related. Reset device multiple times and still nothing. Any suggestions?

As a note, if you have the C71K, then you have DIRECTV STREAM, not DirecTV (and certainly not Direct TV as that is a misspelling that scammers tend to use). Mentioning so that people posting or searching ensure they are in the correct section.

AT&T messed up on the naming options by both have DirecTV in the brands. Also, confusing people as the C71K model number fakes people into thinking it is a new Mini Genie Client for DirecTV.

jrenzi007,

When I had that problem and could not get the box to reset using the ideas presented in this thread, I contacted the seller through eBay.  He refunded my purchase and told me I did not have to send the box back.  Purchased another box off eBay, but made sure it showed the DirecTV screen and not the AT&T screen.  Not much difference in price if any.  Installed it without any problems.

Perhaps this is something you could try.

Those that are getting the error 5107 as a dead end, the ATT website says 5107 is a "failure to complete the download".  The recommendation is to push the red button once to continue it.  Not sure if this works or not, but I am going to try it.

The problems with the boxes off of eBay is that if the orginal owner purchased thru DirecTV Stream/At&T and did not deactivate it from their accounts then its is still registered to the owner. The box needs to be deactivated by the owner to be reused. No factory reset will resolve the issue. DirecTV Stream will not deactivate the box. They request you to contact the owner to deactivate.

I spoke with the chat agent today, and was told that to do a hard reset you need to hold the red button down for a good 30 seconds, past the first reappearance of the logo.  THe box will actually display a resetting the box message.   Hope it helps.

I am trying to get a C71JW-400 that I bought off of ebay (brand new) up and running.  For my first try, I was connected via WiFi and the setup stalled out with the infamous "problem checking for updates" issue.  After reading through this forum, I connected the device with a cable and I followed the hard reset/soft reset steps.   Now the process has stalled out with the "Connecting to the network" message.  It shows a progress bar, but that bar is about 1/8 complete and has not moved for hours (if ever).  I recall seeing a message from Harmelba who ran into the same issue, but I did not see any resolution to the problem.  Any ideas?  Thanks for any help you can give me.

Should have done a forum search about boxes purchased from ebay before you purchased it. Sellers might say new but most of those boxes are previously owned and already signed in and that's why it won't update b/c the previous owner didn't disable "auto sign in"---best just to return that to the ebay seller and get a refurbished box from Dtv for 49.99. It comes with a 1yr warranty and no headaches lol

I was able to get online with a chat agent, explain all the previous failed suggestions from chat agents.  Was sent a replacement box and with a return slip for the old one that wouldnt update.

@moboman72 that's just one of the many reasons online chat has failed. It's best to call DIRECTV STREAM and get more 'proper' and less misleading answers.

@petergroft What does that have to do with the post? Talking about the DirecTV Stream box - nothing to do with Windows 10.

Where did you get the box? Are you using WiFi or Ethernet?

I got it on Ebay, and using ethernet. And yes, I've read all the 'tricks' My understanding is, they changed the URL that the box goes to, to get updates, and if you have one with the old AT%T splash screen, it will never happen. It's a brand new box too, that has

never been used, but useless to me.

Chances are the box is associated with the owner and was not deactivated. Lots of issues like this reported. Best to lick your lips and do the best thing and buy a refurbished from DirecTV Stream.
