Billing issues with DirecTV

1st Issue:  Started with DirecTV’s initial account setup.  The account was set up by my now husband (not married at time of account setup) under his personal information.

2nd Issue:After he was done talking with the rep, I get on the phone to ask if there were other options instead of NFL ticket and was told we could decline that access and receive a credit on our bill.  I thought at that time our account was setup.

Fast forward to when we cancel the account.  The early termination fee was paid, current charges were deducted with auto pay, so rep taking care of our cancellation stated we just had to return the equipment, which we did via UPS.

3rd Issue: Come to find out the account was set up under my SS# which I had no knowledge of and did not give my permission to do so.  Didn’t find this information out until later after being reported to a collection agency for an early termination fee AND ALL of the months of NFL ticket we declined and were told we would get credits for instead.  Go in to add 2 additional lines to my wireless account and I am unable to do so because of the $5xx+ DirecTV charge.  I will not pay for services I did not request of ever access and for a fee that has already been paid.

I have had my wireless account with Cingular/AT&T wireless since cellphones were created and this issue with DirecTV seriously has me thinking of cancelling my 5 lines and going to a different company.  TERRIBLE customer service.  If anyone has had this issue, I would greatly appreciate any advice you may have on how to handle this issue.  Thank you!

You can't decline the free season of NFL Sunday Ticket and it auto renews in the second year and continues until canceled, the first installment is posted in July and there is notification of renewal on the bill in June and each installment is also on the bill.

NFL Sunday Ticket free for the 1st season is in most intro offers. It is not something that can be removed from the offer. The order confirmation would list it as well as advising of the auto renew.

In June the bill shows a renewal notice advising of the new season. July shows 1st of 6 installments. You have until the season starts (in September) to opt out and get any already charged installments reversed. If you cancel the account without having opted out of the renewal, remaining installments charge on the final bill.

Name and SSN not matching is another matter.

If you where on auto pay then it would have payed for the NFL Sunday Ticket so why is there a past due charge?

The DirecTV rep I talked to definitely said that we could pass on it and would get a credit.  When the account was set up, it was during the time DirecTV was offering a bonus MasterCard (or Visa?) with a certain amount after so many months of service.  I don’t know why the rep would tell me that if it was free unless he wanted to make sure we didn’t change our minds on the service?   Also, when the account was set up, my husband received the billing and paid for it monthly, so I don’t know how my info was used to open the account and do not have any statements from 2019 to review.  One of the last collection reps I spoke with was going to credit the NFL ticket charges, but oddly my call was disconnected and that never happened.  No comment on the early termination fee that we paid and somehow was tacked on along with the NFL ticket charges sending us to collections?  Also, at the time of cancellation we were told the account would be closed and no additional charges would be added since the early termination fee was paid unless the equipment was not returned, which we did and DirecTV confirmed receipt.  I noticed in these forums, not much help is provided by employees and some comments are a little rude.

How can you get a credit for a free year?  The collection agency bought the account from DTV so they can't credit back anything they can lower the amount they will except to settle the account.

The DTV/AT&T employees on here are on their own time and can't speak for their company.

Teetertotter,

We are thinking that is what we’ll have to do.  Funny I came across another post on AT&T forum by a customer under the screen name of Mcgaffey that was having the same issue.  Mcgaffey’s post was closed supposedly by an employee under the name spoom2 since AT&T does not own DirecTV.  Last rep I spoke with on this past Thursday said that AT&T wireless and DirecTV were the same company so no one at AT&T could help me unless I paid.  BTW, he was by far the worst customer service experience I’ve had to date by an AT&T rep.  Thank you for your suggestion on reporting this to the BBB, I will definitely do that.

Shannon02,

I don’t know why one of your fellow employees would say that they would credit back the NFL ticket when supposedly it can’t be done?  Why would AT&T/DirecTV bill me for things that have already been paid months after our account was officially closed?  I thought this forum would give me some advise by other customers that have had the same issue, like Mcgaffney from the AT&T forum.  Her post was closed, so I can no longer correspond with her regarding this subject.

@Cajohnsn6 Shannon02 is not an employee. No one who has posted on this thread is a Directv or ATT employee.

New to the forum.  Their unhelpful comments, when I requested advice, made me jump to conclusions that they were employees.  My apologies…

This is a public forum of other customers. There are a few with the "employee" tag, but are posting on their personal time (off-the-clock) so not on behalf of the company.

For official support you would call DirecTV. However with balance sold to collection agency you either just simply settle with them or you can attempt a BBB complaint.

Collection agents don't work for DTV/AT&T either.

@Cajohnsn6

since AT&T does not own DirecTV.

AT&T does own DirecTV and have for a few years. They simply spun off the service adding in a partner, where AT&T retains 70%.

However, AT&T/DirecTV no longer owns the balance for your account as that was sold to a collection agency. So from here it is deal with collection agency or trying a BBB complaint.

Sorry you may not find information to your liking, but there is no magical advice to just resolve situation in your favor. You have your options.
