If you have a DirecTV HBO subscription then HBOMax is included as part of that. Cancel HBO and your HBOMax subscription is also canceled. If you have HBOMax separate from DirecTV's HBO package, then you cancel that via the HBOMax website.
DirecTV is open all 7 days of the week untlil Midnight Eastern Time. I would verify you are calling their number, not the AT&T one as they have more traditional business hours.
