How does one change their package after being on Directv for several years?
We have had Directv for several years now. Our needs have changed. We have fewer TVs and can no longer afford the package we got. I have been told if we make any changes we have to sign another contract for 24 months. Is this true? If so, we are leaving.

No, that is not true. Changing your programming package does not incur a new contract or a change to any existing contract. To change your programming package call, though you might be able to change your package online. Others here claim the only way to downgrade to a lower package is to call but the last programming package change I made was a downgrade and I did it online but that was 5 years ago.

May I ask, what is your current programming package and how many TVs do you currently pay for? Also, what are the models of the boxes that you currently have in each room. This can be found by opening the front door of each receiver or the bottom of newer receivers. The model should look like this (xyy-yyy) for HD non DVR boxes or clients and this (xxyy-yyy) for HD DVR receivers. Each x represents a letter and each y represents a number. If you provide us the models, we can better assist in the boxes that can be removed as well as unnecessary extra charges for service that you will not need.

Changing programming package never renews the agreement. That agent was clueless. Only an upgrade of equipment, a Movers order, or some 12 or 24 month discount offers come with an agreement.
To lower package, you call DirecTV. The process is the same regardless of how long you've had DirecTV. Depends on the channels you watch on which package is now the right one.
If you have fewer TVs, make sure you deactivate the boxes for them. That will save you $7 per TV.
Many agents will push for a new equipment setup. To be sure if you do have a required swap, a reasonable upgrade to consider, or just keep it the way it is (with removing the unneeded TVs either way of course), what are the models of each box you have now?
