I use to have direct tv and I had it shut off I need to know if I had a old past due amount and how much but I do not have my old account number

You call DirecTV. They can look up your account by other info.
Like most companies, account number is not the only way. It just is usually the quickest.
Depending on how long it has been, if they see a $0 balance ask them to check if there is a write off balance. If so they will have info on the collection agency the balance was sold to.

This is true. When I call AT&T for my U-Verse stuff, I always give them the phone number on the account without any issues.
