Unauthorized charges

My mother‘s DIRECTV account was canceled in 2022 there she passed. In dealing with Directv Support they say there’s no record but the statements that were emailed stopped as of 3-22.

Yet they have pulled payments out of my business account for the last four years probably because my phone number was on both accounts. They are saying they will give a three month credit and they do not have a carpet number. Google says the best thing to do is file complaint with the Better Business Bureau for unauthorized charges and fraud.

When your mother passed whoever was handling her affairs should have contacted DirecTV. That should have resulted in cancellation of the account and updating billing to go to the Executor of the Estate for any final statement.

An issue is that DirecTV has a 60 day billing dispute policy (in practice this traditionally extends to the last 2 bills plus the bill cycle currently in). They expect to be notified within a reasonable time if there is a dispute. The phone number has nothing to do with where payments are going to be pulled from. It is the card on file that payments are charged to.

At 4 years it is normally way too late for a dispute as that is beyond reasonable time. However, since this is not simply a dispute of account wasn't canceled as requested (usually viewed as customer error in managing their finances when it is counting in years) but the account owner passed (so where one shouldn't be charged in the first place as they don't have surviving spouse taking ownership of account), that may be the key factor that weighs in your favor.

At this point a BBB complaint is the way to go. This results in reaching the corporate level, which normally gets you contact from DirecTV's "Office of the President" (corporate) within a few business days. Be prepared to submit death certificate as supporting documentation. Good luck.
