What are "prescreened credit offers" and why am I being billed for an upgrade I didn't ask for or accept?

I got a billing statement today for an upgrade to my Direct TV service plan that I did not ask for. I was able to talk to Direct TV and cancel the upgrade, but I found out the reason this happened was Direct TV has partnered with a credit company which offers "prescreened credit offers" that automatically bill customers for special offers they did not request. According to the email, if I want to "opt out" of the special offers, I have to call...and give personal info that I refuse to disclose...so I can't opt out.

Why would Direct TV do this? What kind of scam is this? Why should it be on me to opt out of some program I never optted in on. And why should I have to take the time to cancel things I never ordered?! So far it's taken 4 hours of phone calls to get the upgrade cancelled. And since I am unable to "opt out", I am apparently going to be billed for future offers I don't want and will have to keep calling in to cancel.

Why is this happening?????

Nobody contacted me offering me a choice. The system just automatically signed me up for the upgrade! The email said I was being given this offer and automatically billed for it because I qualified for the special due to my credit rating with Experion.  (Edited per community guidelines)??!!! It took me two days of haggling with Direct TV to get the issue solved. And nobody I talked to admitted that it happened...they just said it was some kind of mistake...they didn't believe that I could be billed directly for something I did not sign up for...but it happened. The email announcing it said if I didn't want to be given upgrades in the future, I had to go to what turned out to be Experion and take myself off the list. This (Edited per community guidelines). Why should I have to do anything? I didn't ask for this. And when I called the number to take myself off future offers, they wanted personal information, like social security number and date of birth...that I refuse to disclose over the phone...so I couldn't get off the list!  Seems like a complete scam to me!

The same thing happened to me - twice! The only way I knew it happened is that I received an email from DirecTV telling me there was a change to my account. I called in and they told me Showtime was added free for three months, then it would automatically be dropped. I told them to take it off because I didn't request it, which they did. A month later, same thing happened. Email about a change, call in, have it removed. The only way to stop this totally unethical behavior is to call in to the credit agencies and have your name removed from these offers: 888-5-OPTOUT (888-567-8688)

This is one of the worst ways to gain the confidence of subscribers. It's no wonder AT&T's reputation (Edited per community guidelines) so bad and their stock is in the tank.
