4k video without the need for a mini genie
I have Direct TV Satellite with a HR54-700 Genie and a 4k Sony Bravia that is DirecTV Ready. My understanding is that to get 4k I need a 4k Client and thats what DTV is trying to sell me in a Genie Mini or a Gemini. My TV being DirecTV Ready means its a 4k Client RVU though so it should work without any other equipment. I finally convinced DTV of that but they say they have to send a tech out to activate 4k. Anyone know if this can be done over the phone or by me instead of a tech that costs $100?

A 4K upgrade, even with a DirecTV Ready/RVU TV, requires a tech. This is to ensure the service is correctly activated on the account and to verify all equipment is compatible and connected correctly. They haven't had a self-install 4K option.
Using the TV Client, Mini Genie, or Gemini has no difference in monthly cost. It is still $7 for the additional TV/client fee either way.
Be aware that performance may not be as well with the TV client vs a Mini Genie/Gemini. Similar to 'smart' TV vs dedicated streaming box. The dedicated boxes tend to have better processing.
Though I vaguely recall a RVU install/activation was about $49.99. I would call DirecTV back and verify you got an RVU order, not a regular service call. The DirecTV ready TV program stopped several years ago, so agents are probably very unfamiliar with the correct order option.
