DirectTV is old, when will ATT upgrade it?

I am a long time DirectTV Satellite subscriber. I am astonished that the equipment has not been updated in at least 4 years, possibly more. I am running the Genie HD DVR (no 4k availability on DVR for TV that it's connected to), Genie 4k Minis in all other rooms. The picture quality of DirectTV is terrific which is why I chose it in the first place. However, when I visit friends with Xfinity, Verizon, and other traditional cable companies the equipment is far superior to what I have.  Xfinity has voice activated remotes, 4k DVR, a much more advanced menu system, etc.  The remotes for DirectTV are not competitive in design or ease of use. Before ATT acquired DirectTV the equipment was updated every 2-3 years and each subscriber was allowed 1 "free" equipment upgrade every 3 yrs., when will ATT update the equipment as it's becoming "legacy" and has me considering moving off to a traditional cable supplier.

Hardware for DTV has definitely been neglected. Where ATT thought they were going with TV services, I’m not sure anyone here knows but it’s pretty clear that whatever that direction was has now been abandoned. With the spinoff of all TV services to a separate company, I’m hopeful new hardware is in the works. I never even upgraded to a genie, I’ve got two HR DVR’s and I know it’s only a matter of time before the hard drives fail.

DTV lets you get free upgrades every 2 years but there is nothing to upgrade to.  The HR54 was to far into production to change the HDMI port to 2.0 when the standard was changed to require it, then DTV went with the HS17 Genie2 that is not connected to any TV.

AT&T still owns 70% of DTV.

Hard to say.  The technology is quite old, it's possible they might switch to something new entirely?

i have had service over 7yrs.!   & have had 1 upgrade- the genie hd dvr.    i have called about this several times, & get the run around.  wow!! i wish knew about the "every 3 yrs".  i am most upset about the cable, & 4 wayj splitter.  the cable has no markings, & seems thin to me.   i have 1 cable that is over 30 ft. long  that attaches to a  tv literally 10 ft from the dish.  the excess is coiled! outside the window.  the spliter is used for that 10 ft run & a 2nd run (20ft.away with about 2ft slack)  however splitter is a 4x out splitter, only used by those 2 runs.   who knows how old the dish is. well at least 7yrs!!!    sticker on swim dish- 301LNBRO_01

XE3DA 1713 B9372.    splitter is MSPLIT 4R1-01   2-2150mhz.    svvs 14-R3.   it does look like a thin 14 size cable,  that could be  correct size?  but R3 ?? that cant be right??  thank you for any direction with this.    next stop hughesnet.   " aaahh!"

Historically if it has been at least 2 years (not 3) since your last upgrade (adding a TV counts), and account is in good standing, then your account qualifies for a free upgrade.

Being qualified doesn't mean there is something you can upgrade to. The Genie is DirecTV's highest level of equipment. Satellite equipment doesn't advance quickly, so the receivng dish and boxes can be the best for your setup for many years.

Hughesnet though is by satellite, is not TV but an internet provider. The equipment does not share DirecTV's equipment, cabling, or dish.

What are the models of each DirecTV box you have? Are you experiencing any trouble with your service, or just concerned it is 7 years old?
