DirecTV equipment
Hey everyone. So we built a new house with the TV over the fireplace, and before anyone points out what a terrible location it is, we like it there. But…the annoyance is I ran all the equipment down to the basement and use IR repeaters to run my cable box. While it mostly works, it’s pretty glitchy and my wife doesn’t like it.
We used to have DirecTV and liked it better than the cable we have now…I seem to see mixed reviews that say the directv remotes are RF instead of IR and can function through walls…if that’s the case, we’d probably change tomorrow…can anyone confirm either way??

There are Directv remotes capable of operating in either IR or RF mode, you just need to ensure you get a model that has both.

We have both the old DirecTV remote and the new one. The old one has to be pointed at the reciever but the new one can be used without direct line of sight. I goof on my wife sometimes by taking my new remote into the basement and changing the channel on her.

If you were to start DirecTV at this time, their newer boxes (known as Genie and Mini Genie Clients) use the new RC7X series of remotes that has both infrared (IR) and radio frequency (RF). This is built-in for the receiver, as opposed to old boxes that needed a special model of the old RC6X remotes with a IR receiving dongle plugged into the box.
I have no experience with IR repeater so cannot say how well they work with current DirecTV equipment.
If you have only a single TV, you might consider a Genie-2 (HS17) setup as you would have a Mini Genie Client on the TV which some people use for locations like the fireplace you mention because of the smaller form factor (such as placing behind or alongside the TV depending on your exact setup). There is even a wireless version of the Mini Genie so that the only cord from it would be power and to the TV. The wireless video bridge (WVB) built-in the Genie-2 server tower has a range of up to 80 feet in ideal conditions.
If you do decide to move forward with DirecTV, make sure to read the order confirmation emailed to you in full before install to make sure all is as expected. And order either via their direct number or website as is risky ordering through 3rd party vendors (such as those that operate in other stores like Sam's Club or Wal-Mart).
