Nope. DIRECTV is received by a satellite dish and thus does not need your internet connection. Though, you would be missing out on things like PPV, on-demand, controlling your DIRECTV receiver with your phone or other device, and watching TV over broadband if the satellite signal goes out (this only applies to the HR44 and above since those receivers have this feature).
So DTV came out with this thing called STREAM SAVER. The way it works is that if you hook up your internet to your genie (I believe hr 50 models are the best suited) you have the option of having the internet take over for brief downtimes. Its something they introduced last year I believe around end of November.
It works like this: You have DTV Sat and suddenly a storm hits and makes your signal go out. Well with the Stream Saver™ it will take over and allow you to keep watching. Its not something thats permanent. Its for temp use. Not something to lean on.

DirecTV is service by satellite, so no. Internet is just for optional features.
DIRECTV STREAM (a separate provider under the same company), is streaming over the internet so yes it is required for this one.
(Just clarifying as the similar name causes them to be mixed up occasionally).

There are folks in Florida that have posted here that they get DTV during Hurricanes.
