DVR Upgrade - Lose recordings from old DVR

Sorry, that’s not possible. All recordings currently with DIRECTV satellite are stored on each receiver’s individual hard drive. Recordings are encrypted and can only be watched on the specific receiver that taped them in the first place. While there are ways to replace a hard drive and retain recordings on the SAME box, replacing the box and keeping old recordings from another receiver intact is not possible at this time.

Nonetheless, there are high chances most content will air again or be available on/demand so at the end of the time it isn’t TERRIBLE if you lost a lot of content.

Recordings are not transferable as they are encrypted to their exact DVR. You would either have to record the current recordings the old fashioned way (real-time, non-HDMI, VCR/recordable DVD), record them the next time they are on, or see if any of the content is available from On Demand to download.

Why are you looking to replace your DVR, is it having problems or are you looking for something it doesn't have? What is the model of the box?

Help! Everything I've read & seen while my dvr is on pause stated when upgrading to the Gemini, I won't lose my dvr recordings, however I just spoke to a rep & was told I will lose my recordings. My dvr is almost full & I can't lose my movies. I can't save them to my streaming platforms because I'll have to pay to watch some of them. My dvr has been messing up. I'm extremely disappointed, I just had surgery so I'm in pain on top of the disappointment. I've lost movies due to having to change the dvr 3 times since 2006. Is there any way or anyone who can help me? I know it doesn't seem important, but I'm on disability & watching my dvr movies is my happy place.

If a DVR is replaced, the recordings on it are lost. This is because they are encrypted to the exact box that recorded them. DirecTV has never implemented a way to save them, even for a warranty replacement.

Using a 3rd party method, VCR or a PC with audio/video capture setup, is the option. You just cannot use anything by HDMI as the network and content owners do not want you recording HD content which affects their sales (physical and digital).

Don't view anything on the DVR as permanent. You don't own the content. It is just long term storage for convivence. If you really need specific movies to keep rewatching, then I would look into getting a permanent copy (i.e. DVD) of them.

Gemini is a client so doesn't have a hard drive or tuners so there is nothing to lose if it is replaced, it uses the Genie for that and can't work without it.  Hard drives fail at anytime so are not for permanent storage.
