Expand DVR Size
Can anyone tell me the correct way to do this? I have one of the I guess newer models of the HR54-500 Receivers. I read that I think it comes with a 2 TB Hard Drive. I’d like to be able to put a larger one in its place. I currently have stuff stored on this current DVR, if I were to attach a larger hard drive, would those recordings transfer over or no?? It’ll help me decide weather to wait until I clean it off before I do it.

I think the one I have now is the HR54–500. I think it’s the same model I had before, but this one is different than that one. It looks cheaper as someone posted above.

Is that your only box or do you have others?

If it is your only receiver you should have a tech swap the HR54 for an HS17 with Gemini/Genie client. The HS17 has twice the storage of the HR54.

What connections are on the back of the HS17?

If you only have a single TV and don't plan for anymore (or at most 1 more), than the Genie-2 (HS17) can be considered.
Has a 2TB hard drive and 7 tuners. Your Genie (HR54) has 1TB and 5 tuners.
Would put a Mini Genie Client on the TV since the HS17 is a Headless Server tower that sits by itself. Since not changing number of TVs and you already are at the max equipment level, there is no increase to monthly bill.
Recordings do not transfer, but if your HR54 bit the dust than those would be lost anyway. As a note, since clients can only use a single tuner each, the HS17 does not have Picture in Picture (PiP).

There are no outputs on an HS17 it doesn't connect to any TV only minis are connected to TVS.

The HS17 just sits on the floor or in a closet or anywhere you want within reason as it has to be connected to the dish.

Ah. Ok. Is there a receiver anywhere? I prefer to watch on demand with a wired device.

Those are the minis/clients that have no tuners or hard drives so are not technically receivers most techs prefer to install the wireless versions as it is faster so they can get to the next job but there are wired versions.

I will always prefer wired over wireless. That way my connection while watching VOD is as good as it can be. I have 1 gig fiber internet now. My PC always gets close to that both upload and download and it’s wired. I’d hate to knock it down to around 500 Mbps. That’s about what my iPad gets.

Doesn't matter as DTV is still using 10/100 for their internet connections. We have always recommend wired when possible.
