Gemini disappointment
Got the new dtv Gemini upgrade for free with extending my contract. This replaced a genie mini 4k that was sent back when Gemini came in.
The Gemini is trash. Turns off on its own ( yes energy save is turned off) and there is no rhyme or reason to when it happens. Apps buffer and never had the issue prior. Will randomly go into app mode on its own ( has happend a few times). The remote itself is flakey. Will control volume sometimes and other you can press volume multiple times with no response ( yes batteries are new).
It's has been unplugged and red button reset multiple times.
I started a chat with dtv to send Gemini back and get a genie mini back. Was told no problem and was emailed a return label, but I had to call customer service to get the genie sent to me. Ok no problem.
This is where it gets infuriating!!!!! After being transferred from dept to dept. I'm told "will give you premiere protection plan for free". After questioning the guy he confesses " free for 3 months then an additional $13 a month. No!!! Then it was " we can send you a genie mini for $199). Absolutely not I'm returning defective equipment and your sending back what I had... Countless back and forth then it " ok will send you one for free but with another additional 2yr contract". (Edited per community guidelines)!!!! Then " how bout we meet halfway $100 and no contract?". No!!!!!
I have been a dtv customer for over 20 years and never considered dropping there service but if this is how they run now it might be what I have to do...
I put the replacement ordeal to the side for now and ask them to fix or replace the Gemini l, and have a tech coming out Monday. Not sure if it will do any good.
Anyone else having these issue or know how to simply get my genie mini back and return Gemini without them charging for the box or upping contract?????
Getting severely (Edited per community guidelines)

@merlin88merlin Then the Gemini is not for you as the only reason to get it is for the integrated streaming. You can still upgrade to the HS17 Genie2 and mini only system.

1 - don't want wireless unless I get a mini wireless only for another room.
2 - want wired to main box.
3 - I cannot locate clear documentation of what is available today, and if I have a choice to what would be installed. don't need 4k, don't want wireless for everything. as many have said, Directv communications are very poor and I was hoping the purchase of Directv by the other company would improve things, but it doesn't appear to be.
and thanks, Shannon02

DTV is only installing the HS17 Genie2 and it can be both wired or wireless but the techs prefer wireless as it is faster so they can get to the next job so you need to make sure they wire where you want. Only 2 minis are 4K capable the C61K and the C71WK Gemini and there is no different in price for non 4K minis or 4K minis.

:( HS17 Genie2. reviews on that model are pretty poor also. so another question-is the wiring the same coax cable I have today to my HR23? i would want the newer box in the same place as current box.

Like most DTV new models it had bugs in the beginning that have been fixed. Most likely the coax can be reused.

@merlin88merlin
You have either an H23 or HR23, there is no HD23.
All Genie setups are SWM only. Your current box can use SWM or the older multiswitch. DirecTV simplified by going to the new single wire system to avoid an octopus of cables.
The Gene-2 (HS17) doesn't go on a TV and forbids receivers. If you have more than one box, do not go with it. The regular Genie line would permit your current box.

Hello @ikoz, our engineering team has taken a look at your issue. Please remove any additional sound devices from your setup, such as AVR systems, and we will keep following up. Juan, DIRECTV Community Specialist

Hi Juan, I am not sure how the AVR has anything to do with the Gemini rebooting. If I need to plug it directly in the TV, that means that again, the box was not properly beta tested. There thousands of people out there that are using AVRs and connecting their boxes like that. How else I can use the 5.1 surround sound that is offered by the box? Because for sure is not going to be available if I getting sound from 2 TV speakers. To me it seems a software issue and the box needs to get the proper updates.

@ikoz we understand the inconvenience of not being able to use the 5.1 sound with the AVR system. Our engineering team is currently working hard to fix this issue, and we appreciate your patience. In the meantime, we kindly ask you to try using the box without the 5.1 audio system and let us know if the problem persists as it will help us to work towards a solution on this. I agreed to a 12 month contract extension with DirecTV in exchange for the Gemini. I wanted the Gemini for its ability to control apps from one remote and one input.
I have been very disappointed so far. The original Gemini that I was sent was extremely buggy (had to reset 5 times to get it to partly work), especially when using apps. The problems with apps is that they buffer frequently, and the resolution is much worse.
I reached DTV technical support and they told me they've never heard of these problems, which was a big surprise, and they blamed it on my internet connection (I have fiber at the house).
Interestingly, when I go to the apps directly from my TV, bypassing Gemini, there are "no" buffering or resolution problems. I pointed this out to the DTV tech and he still said it was my internet connection.
This has been very, very frustrating, partly because I continue to need to contact DTV technical support, and mostly because the tech doesn't acknowledge the problem, accept that it is the Gemini, and know how to fix it.
Does any other Gemini users have similar problems with buffering and resolution?

Hi,
I do not use the Box as to use other steamable applications; however, you are not the only one experiencing this issue. Buffering is all over the Internet with these Boxes. My issues are that the Box simultaneously reboots and interrupts signal. The Gemini was never ready for Prime time ; however, DirecTV are desperate for customers. I love the Gemini, but is extremely buggy. I run mine through an AVR, and I was told by DirecTV person to plug the box in my TV. I am like are you serious?? I am not losing Surround Sound, so they can check if the AVR is the issue or not. I am not the only person in US running it that way. The bottom line is...they try to flip it to the customer, like your Internet is bad, your cables are bad....it is quite embarrassing imo. I hope your issue gets resolved....but for a techy person myself, I can say that with an Gigabit Internet, you should not have this problems.

Ive had the same issue. It completely shuts off while using an app and pause it. It shuts off at exactly 5 minutes of pause and power buttons turn off on box and it plays hells kitchen. When you hit the power button it comes back on to the direct tv channell you were watching before you started using the app. This issue has been escalated so we will see. It has nothing to do with power saving mode but rather an app problem that shuts off the equipment.
