Genie Warranty Replacement & RVU Client Issue

Based on input and recommendations from Juniper, I was able to get through to DIRECTV customer service and request a warranty replacement for my defective Genie HR44. Cost was $19.95 and should be delivered within a week or two. Next, I asked about replacing my current 2015 Samsung TV RVU Client with a HDDVR. I further explained I was replacing my current 2015 Samsung TV with a new 2022 LG OLED. Since the LG does not have the software required to function as a RVU Client, I needed to replace the RVU Client with a HDDVR. The agent then advised that the new LG OLED TV would work as a RVU Client. He gave an explanation of why it would work; however, I'm doubtful if what he was saying was accurate as I've already been advised that the new LG OLED does not have the software to function as a RVU Client. So, for now I'll wait for the Genie warranty replacement to arrive and then try to hook it up. And then figure out what to do about the RVU issue.

Thanks for now.

Connected and activated the replacement HR54. Then, added the C41 Client and 2015 Samsung RVU TV Client in the HR54. DIRECTV Technician was very helpful, but not very knowledgeable about how to add a RVU TV Client. Therefore, I decided to follow your advice. I added the RVU TV Client in the HR54 like I added the C41 Client. It worked. All devices seem to be working just fine. Thanks for everyone’s help.

Doubtful it will work since RVU TVs haven’t been made at all in the last couple years. I agree, you should try to replace that RVU TV with an HDDVR (HR24) or at least a standalone HD receiver (H24, H25) if there isn’t currently an HDDVR in stock.

The LG TV is certainly NOT RVU-compatible.

To my knowledge, Samsung was the only brand that had DirecTV Ready TVs (built-in RVU client). They were only available for a few model years which already ended.

As such, there should be no LG TV with a DirecTV RVU Client. And I always suggest a DirecTV box, preferably an HDDVR, over RVU for better reliability. No difference in monthly cost as that $7 covers the authorized TV no matter how connected.

Appreciate your input. Received warranty replacement for Genie HR44. It is a Genie Gen 3, Model HR54-200. Even though I requested a HR44 replacement, am hoping the HR54 works ok. Receiving the replacement along with instructions in a couple of days was good service by DIRECTV.

Since I’m not a tech person, I wanted to get some additional clarification on a couple of issues prior to going forward with the actual replacement installation.

My current set up: Genie HR44, C41 Client, and 2015 Samsung RVU TV Client.

1. Since DIRECTV sent the HR54, I am assuming both the C41 Client and Samsung RVU TV Client are compatible with the HR54?

  1. Regarding the installation instructions section, “Pair Your Genie Minis to Genie HD DVR”, I’m not clear at this point as to how to pair the Samsung RVU TV Client with the HR54. Specifically, under Menu-Settings-Whole Home-Manage Clients-ADD CLIENTS, it seems to be talking about Mini Genies like the C41, and not a RVU TV Client. Anything you could provide as to how to ADD the RVU TV Client would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

There is no "requesting" an HR44. Warranty repalcements are always same model or newer for whatever is pulled off the shelf. The HR54 is a fine receiver. The big difference from the HR44 is no front panel controls. It has slightly improved hardware to support 4K Clients, but no real difference for the average user. The loss of the phone jack is fine since features that supported it were discontinued so was out of use for the HR44.

Genies can use all models of clients. The only exception is needing an HR54 or HS17 to fully use the C61K (4K Client).

As the Samsung TV already received the RVU updates when it was tech installed originally, it 'should' just be a matter of adding Client in the Genie just like you would with the Mini Genie. But perhaps one of my other ACEs can chime in with clarification on that.

Glad it is working. Yes many techs are not familiar with RVU. It was a short lived feature that they moved away from.
