Regular HDDVRs (last model HR24) support up to a 2TB external.
Genie types initially suggested up to 4TB. But there is no official cap. People have been able to use up to 16TB so far. As you don't own the recordings and they cannot transfer to another device, I wouldn't go overboard with size.
External must be eSATA. The 3rd generation Genie (HR54) has a revised model (HR54R1) that does not have an eSATA port. Later production of the Genie-2 (HS17) also removed that port, but did not add "R1" to the model number to show revised.
Unknown if the new co-owner of DirecTV will add the port into future models. Very interested to see what the equipment direction will be now that AT&T is not the only one in the mix.
Remember, some people still have the HR34. Personally I do agree they should warranty replace it. But they may be holding on as there may be recordings they cannot get again or they are holding on to either the old GUI or even Caller ID that the later models can no longer use.
You can definitely connect an external hard drive to your HR54, please keep in mind the recommended drive is eSATA, it will only be necessary to plug it to the eSATA port, there might be the possibility to disable the internal storage of the receiver.
We hope this helps to resolve your inquiry, have an awesome rest of your day!
So long as it isn't an HR54R1 that doesn't have an esata port then you can add an external drive that will disable the internal drive. You power down the HR54 connect the powered down external drive to the esata port then power up the external drive then the HR4.

Is it possible to connect an external hard drive to the back of my Hr54/500 DVDR receiver? What is the process in doing so? Thanks.
