HD DVR obsoleteness
My HR21-100 finally gave out after 15 years of loyal service. I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with support trying to get a replacement HDDVR. They kept wanting to give me a mini genie as a replacement. I kept telling them "no" where they proceeded questioning whether the receiver was located in my home. Then I was told that DTV does not do HDDVR swaps any longer and they would have to "see" if it was possible. After "still checking sir" for about 20 mins, a technician was scheduled to bring me a replacement receiver (no more "we're shipping you a receiver"). The tech was here and told me that in a few months existing HDDVRs will no longer work with DTV. How can this possibly be true?

It's not true.
What is true is that they would much rather "upgrade" you to Genie equipment that simply replace your DVR. They make money on the "upgrades" by triggering a new 24-month contract commitment.

In my case, I got a HR44 about 10 years ago when I moved to my new home. I converted all DVRs to genies except for the HR71-100. It is used by my father (who lives in MY house). I already experienced quite a few years back with whole home where he was running out of space on the HR21 and began deleting all recorded programs on the HR44. He thought he was deleting things he didn't "remember" recording and wondering why it wasn't clearing the space. I just happened to be in the DVR list and wondered why things were disappearing. Not GOOD! One size does not fit all!

The only other way to acquire an HDDVR receiver is through Solid Signal, although at a bit of a cost. Once arrived, ask DIRECTV for an access card ($20). Once the access card arrives, call DIRECTV or Solid Signal to activate the receiver as an additional one.

It is not. The tech was trying to scam an upgrade. Only MPEG-2/SD-only boxes will no longer work as those feeds are shutting down.
Regular HDDVRs haven't been made in years. They were pushed to a Genie-only setup. So HDDVRs are extremely low on stock, if they haven't fully run out. Already having a Genie might make a Mini Genie the only warranty replacement DirecTV can do.
However, alternatively you can choose to get an HDDVR through a authorized 3rd party retailer (such as Solid Signal). This would be an "upgrade" (24 month agreement) and be at the one-time lease cost ($199), but that would allow you to keep dedicated tuners and recording space instead of going to a Mini Genie (which is by capability a downgrade to an HDDVR). Last model made is HR24.
I am very much against them reducing our options to a all-in-one setup. I hope with them being spun off (somewhat) back into another company, that equipment direction will turn in a better direction. Haven't heard anything yet though.

@detuch254 all receivers come with their own access cards not sure why you continually advise people to call DirecTV for a new access card whenever advising of acquiring an additional receiver from a 3rd party

@nabukl most of the time Solid Signal does not include the card for whatever reason. May this be because DIRECTV obtained it per the lease agreement with the customer or another reason, the OP must call for a new access card. All receivers don’t have their ‘own’ card, DIRECTV may program receivers with a new card if activation calls for it.

@detuch254 yes I know receivers can be remarrled to a new access card I've worked for DirecTV 2 different times and have never known a receiver that didn't come with an access card (they're married to each other) except for maybe a used receiver being sold on EBay et al

Well technically they are obsolete as DTV is not making them and the stock of replacement receivers is very low and I would assume that the 3rd party dealers aren't getting anymore from DTV. DTV only gets money from a service contract if the account is canceled within the 2 year period.

@Michael865
If yours is truly the same, then solution given earlier in thread. But best to be sure.
What exactly is your issue? What are the models of each box you have?
