how to get a technician ro come and set up out smart TV to the internet.
was told by a technician last spring that our smart TV was connected to the internet. We are not connected. We have tried to set it up ourselves but cannot understand. we are elderly and would appreciate some assistance. We joined with Peacock but cannot watch it without the internet.

That's not something that a DirecTV technician will be able to do. You might try calling Best Buy's Geek Squad. Or perhaps a tech-savvy neighbor/friend.
Typically you would follow the TV's Internet/Network Setup steps to find your home WiFi's "SSID" name and then enter its password. That password is often printed on the bottom/side of your home WiFi router.

why isn't a tech from Direct TV able to come out and connect a smart TV to the internet? we have been customers for 17 years. We are elderly and need more instructions than are given from the TV. We have joined Peacock, but are unable to watch it until we have internet on the TV. We have wifi for computer, phone, tablet, etc. already.

It's because they're not trained on anything but installing DirecTV equipment. They don't get paid to connect Smart TVs to the internet or install apps. Geek Squad is your best bet if you don't have a friend that can help you.

DirecTV is a satellite TV provider. They have nothing to do with connecting your smart TV to the internet.
A DirecTV tech will not come out as that has nothing to do with your DirecTV equipment. Would you expect your car mechanic to come setup your garage door?

Connecting your tv to the internet to use streaming apps like Peacock is something YOU do yourself, DirecTV has absolutely no obligation to do so. Use your TV remote not the DirecTV remote, go to your tv menu, then network setup, it will Scan for available networks, choose your network, follow on screen instructions to enter your wifi password . Or search you tube videos (on a mobile device) for tutorials on connecting your brand of smart TV to the internet
