What is the issue? What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Please describe issue and include model of boxes for specific help.
If you do a red button reset (behind the door next to the access card, or on the side of the box for some models), it does not delete the recordings. If a Genie/Genie Lite/Genie-2 than all Clients will not work until the reset has finished (since they are extensions that cannot work by themselves.
Unplugging power for a couple minutes clears active memory. This means your guide data (including On Demand info) must rebuild by downloading from the satellite (or internet for On Demand). That is essentially all it does beyond a red button reset.
However, if you go through the menu there is an option to reset the box back to factory defaults which would erase the recordings. This is highly advised to avoid except as a last resort if needed depending on the issue.
