Hr54 hard drive

How does my hr54 hard drive work? Does it have five discs in there it can record on or is it all done digitally.

It's just like any computer hard drive. It uses a spinning platter. It's not a solid state SSD drive.

Recording is done digitally, @magnumrtawd. HR54's hard drive doesn't have multiple discs; recorded content is saved electronically, allowing you to access and manage your recordings directly from the DVR. Rizza, DIRECTV Community Team

The only thing analog about DIRECTV satellite service is the radio signals that come from the satellites.  The channels have always been digital.

@magnumrtawd

It is a single Hard Drive Disk (HDD), not multiple. It is a 1TB size. So recordings work the same as any other DVR DirecTV has, just with more space.

You can use an external eSATA HDD, if you don't have the revised HR54R1 (this version removed the eSATA port). The internal is disabled while an external is connected, so must use one larger than 1TB to be worth it.

So what is encouraging the "inquiring mind"? Are you trying to do something or having an issue?
