Like many electronics, DirecTV boxes have a reset button. Behind the access card door or on the side for some smaller models.
Otherwise, like any other electronic, just pull the power cord for a minute. Be aware unlike a simple reset, this will dump the guide data and will have to load again from the satellites. Guide data usually loaded back in within 24-48 hours.
Whether red button reset or full power cycle, nothing will be able to record until it boots back up. And if this is a Genie, any Clients will not work during that time either.
However, why is it you are looking to reset the box in the first place? As you say with the remote, did it completely freeze up or something else?
