is directv phasing out no genie dvr's?
i had to replace a receiver thats around 12 years old, its sd 2 tuner dvr & i was told i would be upgraded which i thought would be like my other receivers i have hr24 (2 tuner/dvr) however when i received the receiver it was h24 (1 tuner no dvr) & i called to ask why i didn't receive some/any receiver that at least had 2 tuners, hd & dvr & was told they don't have those receivers anymore & they were pushing & pushing the genie which i don't want. just curious if anyone knows if thats true that they are phasing out dvrs so they can make us all have to have the genie?

The answer is yes. No more 2 tuner DVRs unless there is a policy change. And if you have HR24s already the only DVR solution for your configuration is an HR54 genie, the HS17 genie (also called genie 2) does not allow HR24s so these would have to be replaced by genie clients.
If they wouild give you an HR54 why would you not want this? its an ideal replacement for an SD DVR although you might need a different dish/lnb. Tell ujs exactly what your configuration is today

They are no longer making HR24s, HR44/54s so all they have are refurbished and they are running out of them.

He has HR24s which would all need replacing with genie clients. He has not told us how many.

Since AT&T acquired DirecTV, the answer is yes. They were pushing for a simple all-in-one system that was not as flexible for the customer.
The regular Genie line (HR34, HR44, HR54) does support other HDDVRs (and special R22). But regular HDDVRs haven't been made in a few years, so is harder to get one (last model made HR24).
It is the Genie-2 (HS17) that forbids other receivers (DVR or not). This system only allows clients, the all-in-one system I referred to. Can be fine for some, but I personally do not like it as it is restrictive.
An upgrade, or even a required MPEG swap, from an SDDVR should not have resulted in an HD non-DVR (the H24). What are the models of every box you have and what was the model of the replaced one? Did the order confirmation show it was supposed to be an HDDVR?
I do hope that with the new co-owner of DirecTV that eventually they go back to dedicated receivers. They need to make an updated one built from the start to work with the Genie and only on SWM, say an HR25 (not a real model, but would be the logical one especially since the H25 is SWM-only).
