monthly fees?
If I purchase minis & or a DVR from Solid Signal (Currently around $7 per month from directv for the mini client) Is there still a monthly fee for each piece of equipment? If there is a fee, what is the incentive to own your equipment?

Yes, every additional receiver/client on the account costs the regular access fee of $7 per month.
There is no such thing as owning equipment anymore on residential accounts. No matter where you got your account, DIRECTV agents always activate those receivers as ‘LEASED.’
Back then, owning equipment allowed for people to not have to return equipment to DIRECTV when they cancelled. Otherwise, there is no special ‘incentive’.

Both Solid Signal and Weakness state that the receivers are leased on their websites and what you are paying is the up front lease price and you would also be paying that to DTV if you didn't have a free upgrade coming.

You cannot own the equipment. Those 3rd parties, such as Solid Signal, are only allowed to sell 'leased' boxes. They are always the property of DirecTV.
The $7 is the authoirzed TV fee. You pay that no matter what. Even in the very old days when owned boxes were an option, you still paid that fee.
Launch of the Genie is when owned options went away. All Genies and Mini Genie Clients, as well as H25, have never had an owned option. Shortly after that 1st Genie (HR34) came out, owned options for other boxes went away.
The only incentive of owning a box back in the day was to say you didn't have a 24 month service agreement. That really was it. You paid $499 (HDDVR) for that and only had a 1 year warranty. With the new option you have an ongoing warranty. And if for some reason you cancel before the service agreement was up, the cost was cheaper than the purchase to own price of the box.
Hope that clears it up.
