Moving recordings to replacement receiver
DTV is sending a replacement receiver for my failing old one. I there a way to copy recorded shows to the new receiver?
Will my settings be preserved? Anything to watch out for?

Sorry, your recordings will not be preserved. Additionally, your settings aren’t preserved either. What is the replacement receiver model? What model had a bad hard drive? We can tell you any things to ‘watch out for’ as far as specs or otherwise upgrades, downgrades, etc.

Thanks, I was hoping I'd get lucky. My bad one is Genie Gen 2, Model HR44-500.
I don't know what they are sending.

Most likely an HR54 as those are the only ones left in stock.

Nothing is copied from the old box. All that is encrypted to the exact DVR.
Assuming all HR44s are out of stock, you should receive either a HR54 or the revised version HR54R1 (no eSATA port for external hard drive).

They sent a Gen 3, Model HR44-500. My brother swapped the boxes and I spent 40 minutes on the phone with Dtv getting it activated. It's working ok.

You got a HR44? That is a good sign that refurbishing may be catching up. As for 40 minutes, I hope that was counting any hold time as activation process itself should be fairly quick. But the important part is that it is working, so grats.
You were right the first time. The HR44 is the 2nd generation, with HR34 and HR54/HR54R1 before and after it respectfully.
Though supposedly no longer a model required to be returned, I encourage anyone who has one replaced to attempt sending it back. Sometimes the participating shippers will accept slightly earlier models.
As DirecTV hasn't been making any new proper receivers in a few years, having been forced to the Genie-2 (HS17), refurbishing is even more important now. I hold out hope that the new co-owner will bring life back to a good equipment line.
