Yes. Get the DIRECTV app, make sure both your receiver and phone are connected to the same WiFi (internet connection), and choose the receiver under the Equipment list in the app after logging in with your account. Then, press the remote icon and you can control the receiver with the remote. If you have issues, make sure external sources is turned ON. Also, what is the receiver model you are trying to control with the app?
Also be careful if anything assigned to the box changes. When I had to replace a broken remote I used the app for the night. Soon it stopped working, but then yelling came out of one of the bedrooms about their channels changing randomly.
Wasn't intentional, but when we figured out what was going on I about died from laughter. I'm no longer allowed to use that backup option because of our setup.
