Receiver Activation support person
I had a support person send a link wanting me to connect my smartphone to the link so they could access my camera to see my tv screen, to see what I was seeing, while it was booting up. Is this a normal thing or could they be scamming o get into my phone?

Notwithstanding all the above (it's legit, but it's your choice on what apps to install on your phone)...
I would have thought you could take a picture of a screen with your phone and text that picture, or a few...

That is a thing that DIRECTV support agents do during activation. As long as you call the right DIRECTV number (800-531-5000) you are good to click on the link they send you.

I had them ask that. I was not comfortable, not knowing what software might be left over in my phone that could be hacked.
DTV would do well to have a good, convincing page on their web site explaining why this is safe. Malware in phones is a real problem.

I wouldn't do it either.

I get the convenience for troubleshooting. But I would be worried about what else shows up on the phone by accident. Never mind the average person is not only not cautious with the camera but too many want to post everything so don't consider what you don't want strangers to see.

That's what probing questions are for they don't need to see what you're seeing unless there's poor communication between you and the agent. So what are you seeing during boot up ?

It was taking a long time to boot up, so they wanted to see screen. The link they sent me via text message was from a (205) area code?
