Returning Purchased Receivers to DirecTv
After many years of service I’ve canceled my DTV service. In addition to requesting i return my HR-44 they are requesting i return my 2011 purchased (Solid Signal) HR24-500. Since I bought this receiver ($200 at the time) do I legally have to return it? Thanks!

Yes, read the Solid signal ad again as they only collected the up front lease fee that DTV would have charged if you didn't have a free upgrade coming. It is strange that they are asking you to return them as the HR24 hasn't been returnable for years and the HR44 for 2 years so don't be surprised if UPS/FedEx won't take them.

Interesting, is it worth calling DTV to confirm they really want these receivers back (especially if it means a wasted trip to UPS/FedEx) or will they just say return what’s specified in the email? And, what happens if UPS/FedEx refuses to ship them, will DTV still charge me for not returning them? Thanks!

We are sorry you left after many years. Let's meet at PM to check if you need to return your receiver to avoid any non-return fee. Duvan, DIRECTV Community Specialist

You can hang on to them until DTV charges you then you return them and it will be credited back. If UPS/FedEx won't take them then you take them to an E waste recycling center.

...but actually you never owned the receiver, the "purchase" from solid signal was a lease...

Authorized sellers like Solid Signal cannot sell purchase to own. So you paid the one-time lease cost of $199. Back when it was an option, purchase to own for an HDDVR was $499 and was done through DirecTV itself.
Supposedly all models that weren't SWM-only were made non-returnable. But in recent months, it seems earlier models are being requested for return. Unsure if this is for in-house recycling, to make up for the supply issues in new boxes (as HR24 is the last regular HDDVR and works with the Genie line, though not the Genie-2), or a glitch with the new co-owner taking over management and migrating systems.
Best to return it. Even if you had purchased to own you couldn't do anything with it after canceling since receivers may not be reactivated, so cannot be given/sold to someone else.
