RV with DirecTV satellite and box

I purchase an RV with a satellite and box for DirecTV.  The former owner canceled the service and I would like to create a new account with the equipment installed in the rig.  Who do I call?

You can give Solid Signal a call to get your RV going. They are a 3rd party authorized dealer that have been around for over 20-25 years.

Thank you for your quick reply.  May I ask why I am not contacting DirecTV directly?

Further, I just checked their BBB rating it is 1 out of 5 stars.....

@SatDSDP

I say this because DIRECTV won’t install TV in your RV specifically. They do home installations or otherwise have permanent housing installs. Servicing in your RV is done by third parties.

You are still RECEIVING the same service, just getting it installed and maintained through Solid Signal.

I do appreciate your feedback, but based on their ratings I'll pass.  I assume you have some experience with RVs?  I ask, because the owner only had the rig for 9 months and explained that a DTV tech actually came to his house to do the set-up.

@SatDSDP

Do you have DirecTV at home or are you looking for an account just for the RV itself?

DirecTV installs for residential service. They will only install in the RV if it is permanently parked, therby being your residence. Solid Signal is a 3rd party authorized retailer for RVs or other custom setups.

Receiver/Client boxes are owned by DirecTV and cannot be transferred customer to customer. Likely the box is an old enough model that can be recycled. What model is the box?

There is a high chance that your RV has a MPEG-2 dish. As DirecTV has been shutting down their MPEG-2 feeds, going forward you need a slimline SWM dish on a tripod/sled mount or the Winegard Trav'ler. If the dish that came with the RV is either of those, then you are very lucky as a lot of people didn't bother updating their RVs as was for occasional use.

Acquisition by AT&T, issues since the pandemic (including people in general being more upsate about anything), and now a spin-off to a co-owner for DirecTV. Though they have seen better days, 1 out of 5 per the BBB I think is not quite an accurate representation of the service.

You did the right thing doing some research before locking yourself into anything.

Juniper - Thank you for the comprehensive reply.  Answers to your questions...

  • RV only and not a current client...Xfinity
  • RV would be at my home.
  • I do not know the box #, but the rig is a 2021 model with a Winegard Trav'ler.  I'm assuming it would still be an active model, otherwise, my fellow Newmar owners (2021-2022) would pitch a fit that they spent all that money for an out-of-date rooftop unit.

So based on what I wrote above, do you think I would qualify for a home visit?  If so, is there a number I should call?

Unless the RV is the home itself, DirecTV will not install in it. They are intended as residential service that stays put.

However, being a Winegard Trav'ler it sounds like it is set for SWM which is very fortunate. I would discuss with Solid Signal about a Travelers account, something DirecTV used to have for RV-only users.

If this is for occasionaly use, service can be suspended for up to 6 months within a 12-month period. That way if you only need it for RV season, you can manage costs better.

Model of box is normaly behind the access card door on the front panel, or a label on the bottom. But if that box is from same time as dish, then it was supposed to be returned to DirecTV as it is not customer owned.

Neither Solid Signal nor DirecTV will activate that DVR/Receiver. You'll need a new one. I've dealt with Solid Signal and they're very reputable. DirecTV won't touch your RV installation.

Alternatively, get installed in your home by DirecTV. Then take box with you in the RV as needed.

A HD non-DVR, such as H24 or the SWM-only H25, would be ideal for a single TV setup if you don't care to record. Easy to swap back and forth between the home and RV.

Otherwise an HR24 from Solid Signal for having the recording option. Those regular HDDVRs haven't been made in years as DirecTV (while AT&T was the sole owner) was pushed to a Client-only setup with the Genie-2 (HS17). The HR24s are fine boxes, just no longer the flagship model.

Juniper and litzdog911 - Thanks for the info.  The last question, are there others like Solid Signal that I can also research?

Some local home theater installation companies can install DirecTV equipment.
