They keep sending me emails to return equipment
I canceled my service. I’ve called twice about the need to return equipment. Twice, they’ve told me it’s old and not to return it. They have now sent me another email about not forgetting to return it. What is the deal? I’ve been reassured not to worry about it.

Do you have it in writing for you not to return your receivers? What are your receiver models? Because if you do not return one that should be returned they will charge you a sizable fee for not returning.

I don’t, and they just keep telling me I don’t have to remove them. How would I even get it in writing.

They definitely don’t want an HR34 back and I doubt they want a C41W back either. However, you can still try taking both pieces of equipment to a nearby FedEx or UPS authorized store to see if they will take it. Be sure to keep the shipping receipt so that you have proof of return (which can be used in the event directv claims you never returned equipment).
if they don’t want it back, you can recycle the equipment responsibly.

I wouldn’t trust live chat at all for DIRECTV satellite, most of those agents are uneducated and often mislead the customer. DIRECTV STREAM may be a different story..
